#RSRSeesTheUSA Day 65: NY-MA-home

What I thought was going to be a day of just driving home brought me one last surprise, which was a visit to the Corning Museum of Glass and Scott Sayre (a museum buddy who I’ve been messaging with on and off throughout this trip). It felt fitting that somehow seeing Scott marked the end of this trip, especially since he’d been one of the first to message me about it at the start.

I focused on some of the glass object highlights in my Instagram post, but also was really impressed and surprised by how much direct access to hands-on experience there is throughout the museum.

Not only did I get to make my own fired glass wind chimes (well… I got to design them, and then the lovely team did the firing for me), but I got to watch a glass blowing demonstration that was live-narrated to explain the process, and I got to watch glass artisans who’d rented studio space going about their work making everything from abstract glass sculptures to sets of wine glasses.

What a great combination of art and science and history and activities this place is. Plus, in what was probably my favorite example of visitor-centrism, they have a program where you can sketch and share an idea, and their glassblowers just might make it!

And with that, I made it back home and slept in my own bed and came to the bittersweet end of this saga of a trip. It’s been truly lovely, and I’m reflecting on how I want to mark and commemorate it, which I’ll likely be sharing here in the coming weeks.

What a jumble of experiences had been mosaic’ed into her brain, and how much life she’d had so vibrantly.
