#RSRSeesTheUSA Day 55: Denver, CO
I’m here in Denver for a few days to surprise a friend who is about to have both a birthday of her own and a birth day of a new baby. Haven’t mentioned the details, because it’s been a surprise months-long in the planning, and I didn’t want to risk word getting out.
But as of this morning, me and the three other friends who flew in yesterday successfully surprised Lyssa with our presence and had a whole day of brunching, hanging out, seeing her soon-to-be new house, helping her set up her nursery, and watching Eurovision Vision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga, which is somehow now required viewing when we’re all in the same place at the same time.
This is the group of friends who spent the most time together during the most dread-filled, lockdown-est parts of the pandemic, and I truly appreciate how much closer we’ve all become in the last few years and the support we’ve offered each other. It’s a crew of smart, weird, eclectic oddballs, which means they’re my kind of people. As evidence, I offer this picture of the cake we ordered for her, which managed to combine many things Lyssa loves: gourmet food (the guava cream cheese flavor); notoriously bad and much-beloved cult classic, The Room; and a twisted reference to the fact that it’s partially celebrating her upcoming birthing experience. She loved it.
I’m likely going to be shorter and quieter blogging for the next few days as I focus on spending time with friends, but one thing I’ll note for now is that today was a day spent being social and extroverted almost non-stop, and I AM EXHAUSTED. My throat hurts from how much talking (and laughing) happened, my body is reminding me of all my aches and pains, and although I wouldn’t trade a minute of the day, I also feel completely devoid of the ability to communicate with human beings anymore in a way that’s at all lucid.
So here’s to a night of sleeping that will hopefully prove restorative for tomorrow.
