Today’s post is a photo story in 3 museum exhibitions.

The day also involved a bunch of walking around San Francisco, and reuniting with PJ Gubatina Policarpio, one of the amazing former Brooklyn Museum fellows I worked with who’s now out there doing cool shit in museums.

But what stuck with me were these three museum experiences.

1—Alice Neel: People Come First (at the de Young Museum)

What a bravura painter she was! Such a wild and adventurous life! Such luscious brushwork! Such committed social activism! Such variety of subjects (and personal relationships) from the 1930s through the 80s! So many personalities on prime, imperfect and glorious display!

2—James Turrell, Three Gems (at the de Young Museum)

I love James Turrell. I love the Light and Space Movement. I love discovering that I’m in a museum with a James Turrell that I didn’t know was there (see also how I get extra enjoyment out of serendipity by not overly researching). And I loved happening upon this one at just the perfect moment for the light to be kissing just the very edge of the doorframe.

3—Guo Pei: Couture Fantasy (at the Legion of Honor)

This show just opened this past weekend, and excuse my language and my emojis, but holy motherfucking shit 🤯💥😲🤯💥😲🤯💥😲🤯💥😲. Such incredible textile techniques and embroidery usage and reappropriating of Orientalist imagery and elaborate mindblowing creations and excellent pairings of ensembles at permanent collection objects. I literally kept walking up to the next mannequin and laughing in disbelief or repeating “wow!” to myself inside my face mask.

The variety and creativity and intelligence of people in the world should stay in her mind, not least for staving off dystopian gloom.
