Woke up thinking I’d hit the Blue Ridge Parkway and end up in Knoxville, TN by the end of the day.

Instead I took a wander in the rainy Virginia woods, seeing pheasants and deer and listening to birds and frogs and water droplets.

And then was lured by the promise of a tiny house Airbnb with a private hot tub in Asheville, NC, booked it, and changed my itinerary for the day.

The parkway was largely deserted (which I love), and buried in dense fog (which I also love).

There’s something that’s always intriguing about fog. Especially the kind of fog that takes away your visibility. It could be hiding so many things. It makes the mundane mysterious. It brings a kind of evocative melancholia and muted quality to everything that always gets me. Fog takes away the potential for sensorial overwhelm and makes you focus in on what’s right in front of you, because it’s literally all you can see.

Thanks, fog, for keeping me mindful and Buddhist and in the moment about it all.

Also, thanks, Blue Ridge Parkway, for living up to the promise of a great driving experience.

Cloud of the day: a tie between these two views over the highway as I approached Asheville at the end of my drive. I love some sky drama!

Wildlife update. Spotted thus far:

  • all. the. deer.

  • hawks galore

  • 1 raccoon

  • a brace of pheasants (is that the right collective noun? nope. Google tells me it was a nye of pheasants, a covey of pheasants, a bouquet of pheasants, or a bevy of pheasants)

  • a magnificent wild tom turkey

  • vultures

This mini post written to you from my private hot tub outside my tiny house Airbnb in Asheville. Ah, the price dropping perks of waiting to book until the day of travel.
